A few months later, you will receive a tax refund (remember, the amount of the contribution is not taxed in the year in which the income was earned). You can use the refund to pay off the interest and part of the capital that you borrowed. Your contribution will stay in the RRSP, working for you tax-free, until such time as you withdraw the money. The loan itself can be repaid from your monthly income. RRSP loans typically have to be repaid within one year. They are usually not restricted in terms of being paid off earlier than the original term with no penalties. Ask the bank! An alternative when you get your tax refund is to pay off any outstanding balances on your credit cards. That way you will have switched your debt from a high interest vehicle (the credit card at 20%) to a lower interest one (the RRSP loan at 5%). Auto loans are generally more expensive with the banks (7% to 9% at present) than with the car dealerships.

You want to be sure that the organization is registered, and has been vetted independently by Charity Navigator, Guidestar, or similar ranking systems. If I'm considering a regular or somewhat large donation (large for me is $200+, I work for a non-profit too! ), I like to look at the public financial records of an organization to see how they spend their money. I'm also put off by organizations that send out a lot of paper (like the ACLU, which I am a donor to but which annoys me with their constant mailings and phone calls) or sells my name to other organizations (ahem, Planned Parenthood). With that in mind, I've put together a short list of organizations that are currently channeling funds into helping Syrian refugees, with comments as to their strengths and weaknesses. Your mileage may vary, of course, and I'm open to more suggestions, but let this be a starting place. In order of Charity Navigator ranking, top to bottom: Mercy USA is an 501(c)(3) nonprofit* that funds relief work largely in Muslim communities and is considered an Islamic charity, though the organization publicly commits to "no discrimination in aid given, impartial and non-political. Knowing when your dough is perfectly ready to become bread. It's far too common for people to under-proof and over-proof their dough. This is what bakers work so hard for is the whole process of baking it at the right moment. What advice would you give an aspiring baker? Always keep an open mind and try other breads; don't become obsessive over your particular style of bread or process. Stay curious. How does baking shape your outlook on life? Baking serves me as a moment to really slow down. I am at ease when I bake because it shows me how to live with purpose; the transformation of flour, water and salt into bread is purposeful. Any other helpful resources or links on this topic? These have been very helpful to me in a variety of ways: Los Angeles Bread Bakers MeetUp. Very resourceful place to meet other bakers from all walks of life in the LA area.
