Well, if you are a New Yorker, then I would say look into CUNY Queens (Aaron Copland School of Music).. have some great teachers and it is cheap if you a New York resident. The other schools that the other person listed are good schools, but are not cheap by any means (actually they are probably some of the most expensive schools in NYC... ). So to answer your question, look into the local SUNY/CUNY you are going into performance then the most important thing is your teacher (for your instrument) and the conductors. If you are really talented, then you can get scholarships (usually private schools have more scholarships to offer then public schools, which lowers the cost to what a public school would be - and some have further financial assistance to New York residents) - so don't be afraid of looking into schools such as Manhattan School of Music.
