Wesleyan College is a private liberal arts women's college in Macon, GA. Founded in 1836 as the Georgia Female College, it was the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women. Wesleyan's rich history includes being the birthplace of the first sororities: Adelphean Society and the Philomathean Society, which together are known as the "Macon Magnolias. " However, the school no longer has sororities. The campus sprawls across 200 acres of land and is home to nearly 700 students from across the country. A four-year residential college, all traditional students must live on campus. Today, Wesleyan offers undergraduate degrees in 30 major and 33 minor academic programs, eight pre-professional programs, and bachelor's degrees in nursing and fine arts. Wesleyan also offers a dual-degree program in engineering with the Georgia Institute of Technology, Auburn University, and Mercer University. Most classes have less than 20 students and all classes are taught by professors. At the end of each year, seniors are inducted to the Wesleyan College Alumnae Association with a candle lighting ceremony.
